Yves Saint Laurent

About the house

Yves Saint Laurent's perfume history began with the women's fragrance Y in 1964, long before the later men's Y family. Libre gives a clear example of how one central idea can change across editions: lavender and orange blossom remain recognizable, while their surroundings shift. Libre Eau de Toilette adds tea and a musky base.

Libre Intense turns toward orchid, vanilla and tonka. Libre Le Parfum introduces saffron and ginger over a honeyed vanilla base. These are different treatments of the aromatic floral pairing: lighter tea accents, warmer vanilla, or spice and honey. The editions are individual interpretations of Libre, rather than a simple scale of increasing strength.
